Our first set of options considers what alternatives are available for the PUSD District Office in Quincy.
Alternative 1 is to do nothing.
Alternative 2 is to keep the facility open and make retrofits.
Alternative 3 is to vacate the District Office and move it possibly to a vacated facility.

  1. I think if you close Greenville High School you could move the district office to that facility.

  2. Where did the idea that we need to close facilities come from? Our schools have some empty classrooms, why can't we just close those classes down and not heat or clean them? If we close facilities we will create vacant buildings in an already depressed area, increase the likelihood of vandalism and increase the need for more police protection, which we know the county will not be able to meet. I think of Greenville. If the high school sits vacant, it is right on the main street. Will the district stop mowing the lawn, let the roof cave in, etc? If they continue to maintain the building, just how much money will be saved? I think the real issue is the declining enrollment, which does not allow for big enough class sizes to offset the cost of teacher salaries. Could we begin to look at part-time teachers to better offer the courses students need while still having the small number of students? What do the students at the high school think? Would they want to attend school in a different community in order to have a fully comprehensive high school experience? Let's hear from them.

I think it's interesting that our school district use to be one of the richest districts in the nation but because of the decline of timber sales, we have dipped to an all time low in many regards. But what I find most interesting statewide, is: As the State placed more "administrative" staff on board to "educate" our children, our education has become worse and the only threats I ever see are the closing of facilities and laying off of teachers...When are we going to start eliminating the fat on top and allow the teachers, staff and Principals to educate our children? We don't need a district office or the staff in it.

It seems to me that it would be more cost effective to regionalize the district office across the 4 communities, keeping the Superintendant, admin asst and Special Ed director at Quincy Campus to keep them centralized and accessible to the other areas. Closing the current district office would reduce costs.

  5. Ultimate efficiency dictates the abolition of the district. There is no justifiable advantage in having 4 geographically separate communities forced to work in some faux unified effort. Control of and responsibility for running each school, and consolidations necessary in each community should be determined by each local community. Private schools run their operations under these constraints. When will government entities learn this lesson?
